Project Description

For my final project I use NEON tubes to create an abstract grid system that is three-dimensional and changes spatial formation by the lines moving up and down. Through this project I want to explore how the linear light could shape a dynamic space by its vertical movement.

Perspective and Context

In terms of perspective and context, I took inspirations from both early pioneers of abstract art and contemporary artist working with kinetic light. For instance I learned from Francois Morellet’s Sphere-Web and Piet Mondrian’s Composition in Black and Gray on their spatial design using simple geometric lines - they only use static elements but it still creates a dynamic spatial perception. Apart from that I also referenced the kinetic light works created by Nonotak Studio - they also focus on using simple geometry to design light composition in large space.

The technical development of my project can be divided into three parts - the up&down mechanical design, the light and the installation/setup. For the mechanical part I work with five stepper motors and I laser-cut the spools to spin the fish wires. Since there are both vertical and horizontal light tubes, I designed two kinds of axis to hold the tubes - the shorter one and longer one. I use bearings to hold the axis and I also use stepper mount to make it more stable.
